ABOUT FANZINGO

Fanzingo is a participatory media house situated in Botkyrka, Stockholm county, Sweden. Since 2005, the organization has worked for a more inclusive and diverse media landscape through participatory practices for production, learning methodologies and advocacy.

The aim of the organization is to create possibilities for underrepresented stories and perspectives to be seen and heard in the public sphere. Therefore, media education is at the core of Fanzingo’s work. Underrepresented stories and perspectives could be those of young people, people living in the outskirts of cities, people with experience of mental health issues, newcomers, etc. These are all example of target groups for Fanzingos pedagogical work.

Fanzingo also creates work opportunities for trained – but unestablished – media producers to make sure that the change of the media landscape doesn’t stay on the educational level. This way, Fanzingo builds a bridge between local communities of media activists, and the established media industry. Over the years, Fanzingo has developed a unique partnership with the national broadcast companies in Sweden, being able to offer them a closer link to their audience through more inclusive practices.

Most of Fanzingo’s activities are project based. Some of Fanzingos projects have continued over many years and turned into long term sustainable and well known “institutions” for local media activists. Around 20 media producers, pedagogues and project managers are currently working in the organization.
